What encompasses summer, hippie vibes and a music festival ready look all in one? Flower crowns!❁♛ Flower crowns have made a modern comeback over the past few years and are easy to find in stores, but it's just as easy to make your own. Creating a beautiful flower crown starts at the craft store. With a few simple supplies, you can end up with a crown that compares to retail quality. Follow along to this step by step DIY as I show you four versions of different flower crowns. The first three versions follow the same basic technique, the final version is more complex. All four variations will result in lovely flower crowns, great for many occasions.
Version I:
1) Gather supplies, you will need:
- An assortment of fake flowers - fabric or silk
- Hot glue gun + glue sticks
- Elastic headbands
- Craft felt
- Scissors
* Floral wire is optional for this version
2) After collecting supplies, plug in the hot glue gun so it can properly heat while you get organized.
3) Begin deconstructing the flowers, this can be achieved by pulling them off their stems, or cutting them.
4) After separating flowers from the stems, loosely arrange flowers on the headband and plan your layout.
5) Starting with the largest flowers first, begin to glue flowers to the headband. Only a small drop of hot glue is needed to attach the flowers. Carefully press down on the headband after gluing to secure it, but be cautious since the glue will be very hot.
*Tip for securely gluing large flowers: Cut out a small piece of felt, place glue on the felt and overlap the headband with the felt for added structure.
7) Smaller flowers can be glued directly to the headband without felt. They can also be attached in-between petals of larger flowers.
8) Deconstructing other foliage from flower arrangements can provide for fun embellishments and finishing touches.
Tah-da! All done!
* Flower crowns built on elastic headbands still need room to stretch. If you want flowers to be clustered together like in this arrangement, leave at least three inches of space in the back so the headband will properly stretch and fit. If you want the flowers to be spread throughout the entire headband, leave a small amount of space between each flower, that approach is shown in the following version.
Version II:
The same technique was implemented to create this crown, but there are two essential differences:
1) All the flowers were small enough to attach independently, no need to secure with felt.
2) Flowers were dispersed over the entire headband to create a cohesive, horizontal look.
Version III:
This is a toned down take on version one. Small flowers were used, again no need for felt. I only placed flowers around 1/3 of the headband to assure it would be easy to wear with multiple hairstyles.
And now for something completely different! If you're feeling creative and ambitious, continue reading to learn how to make a different flower crown style.
This technique is slightly more advanced and time consuming, but will provide an ethereal and romantic look. You will need:
- An assortment of fake flowers
- Floral wire
- Floral tape
- Scissors
* Optional = hot glue
1) Cut a large piece of floral wire and wrap around your head to measure the size for your crown.
2) Securely twist the ends of the wire together.
4) Wrap floral tape around the ends of the wire to be protected from sharp edges.
(Optional)
5)Wrap floral tape around the entire perimeter of the wire. This is very time consuming, but can provide more structure to the wire.
6) Time to start attaching leaves and flowers! Don't cut leaves/flowers as closely to the stems as in the prior tutorials, more stem is needed to properly secure it. Twist wire around the stem to attach, make sure the leaves face outward and point in a cohesive direction.
7) Continue step #6 around the entire wire.
8) To attach smaller leaves, you can easily poke wire through them. Then proceed to wrap the wire around the base of the crown.
9) Apply same technique for attaching flowers, continue as desired.
10) Wrap floral tape around the edges of any pokey wire.
11) Smaller attachments can be layered on top of other leaves with hot glue.
